Calm Plan-Step 2

Make a Plan

The next step in creating my calm plan was to make a plan! Now that I knew exactly how I felt before I was going to explode I used that as a trigger or cue to implement my plan. Here is my plan:

When I start feeling any of those feelings, chest and muscles tightening, blood crawling and rushing to my head, etc. I would close my eyes and take deep breaths. Then I describe the situation in my head to combat taking any actions personally and engaging my emotions again. Then I open my eyes and describe the situation to my child. Then we can go into the proper correction or problem solving skill to resolve the situation.

There are many different calm plans. They can be as simple as mine, closing your eyes and taking deep calming breaths, or a person may have to leave the situation completely. You could go into another room and rock in a rocking chair or need to pray for the ability to become calm. Just remember to tell your child that you want to handle the situation calmly and that you will be back in five minutes or so when you have gained control over yourself. This is a great example to your child of showing them how you want to interact with them in a positive, loving way!

Now Make a Plan!
